Institutional Growth
The next Dean will lead Missouri S&T’s largest academic college at a pivotal moment of institutional growth. The Dean will be expected to expand the college’s research enterprise, strengthen graduate education, recruit and retain exceptional faculty, grow industry and government partnerships, and position the college among the nation’s most influential engineering and computing institutions.
This mandate comes at a moment of exceptional institutional momentum. In 2025 Missouri S&T earned Carnegie R1 classification, placing it among the top 187 research institutions in the nation. The Wall Street Journal ranks Missouri S&T 8th nationally, and 2nd among public universities, for best salaries earned by its graduates. And the transformational $300 million gift from June and Fred Kummer, the largest gift in the history of Missouri higher education, continues to fuel new research centers, new academic programs, and new opportunities for students and faculty across the university.
Shaping the Future
The College of Engineering and Computing is central to that momentum. It is the academic heart of Missouri S&T, enrolling approximately 80 percent of all students across nine academic departments and more than 170 ranked faculty. The Dean will provide visionary academic, administrative, and financial leadership for this college, advancing excellence in education, research, innovation, economic development, and external engagement, and will play a central role in shaping the university’s future as it pursues bold initiatives to grow enrollment, strengthen graduate education, expand industry partnerships, integrate artificial intelligence throughout the curriculum and university operations, and increase research expenditures.
Transformational Investments and Research Infrastructure
Missouri S&T has backed its ambitions with significant investment, and the next Dean will help activate and advance several signature facilities and strategic initiatives anchored in the college’s core disciplines.
MISSOURI PROTOPLEX — NOW OPEN
The 117,000-square-foot Missouri Protoplex has just opened its doors as a hub for advanced manufacturing, prototyping, and industry-facing R&D. Equipped with more than 50 machines and $12 million in advanced equipment, the Protoplex connects Missouri manufacturers with S&T's research capacity and workforce development programs, positioning the state to compete globally on advanced manufacturing technology, processes, and materials.
MISSOURI BIOPLEX — UNDER CONSTRUCTION
Missouri S&T's largest capital project in its history, the 127,000-square-foot Missouri Bioplex broke ground in April 2025 and is slated for completion in 2028. Anchoring the south side of the Oval, the facility will centralize the university's Center for Biomedical Research and house 24 research team spaces, an ABSL-2 vivarium, a cognitive neuroscience suite, and teaching and conference space, advancing work at the intersection of engineering, medicine, and biology. The project is fully funded by private gifts.
MISSOURI GEOPLEX — ON THE HORIZON
Missouri S&T is advancing the Missouri GeoPlex, a statewide initiative that brings together geospatial engineering, artificial intelligence, drones and autonomous systems to address challenges across air, space, ground and sea. Through technology development, testing, education and workforce development, the GeoPlex will position Missouri as a national leader in geospatial innovation, mobility systems, infrastructure, agriculture and smart communities.
ADVANCING NUCLEAR ENERGY
Missouri S&T is also advancing a comprehensive nuclear energy strategy that includes modernizing the university’s existing research reactor and exploring a nuclear-hybrid energy research campus centered on a small modular reactor. Together, these efforts would expand research and innovation while building a cradle-to-career pipeline for the nation’s nuclear workforce.
Together, the Missouri Protoplex, Missouri Bioplex, Missouri GeoPlex and the university’s nuclear energy initiatives represent an institutional commitment to building the research capacity, infrastructure and partnerships needed to compete nationally. The next Dean will help ensure these investments, and the faculty and students who bring them to life, reach their full potential.
